Morgan Stanley sees AI spending by Big Tech hitting $1.1 trillion in 2027, surpassing US defense budget for first time
The Kobeissi Letter on July 5 highlighted that AI spending is reshaping the US economy. Capital expenditures on AI by Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, and Oracle are expected to reach approximately 3.2% of US GDP by 2027. If this forecast materializes, annual AI capital spending will surpass the US defense budget for the first time in history, with the latter expected to account for about 2.7% of GDP next year. Data shows that AI capital expenditures by these five companies are expected to exceed $800 billion this year, rising sharply from 1.5% of GDP in 2025 to about 2.5%, already approaching the defense spending estimate of approximately 2.7%. By 2027, this figure is projected to surge further to a record $1.1 trillion. Morgan Stanley has independently made a consistent forecast, noting that the five tech giants' AI spending will reach $1.1 trillion in 2027, accounting for 3.2% of US GDP.
